On behalf of the Organising Committee and of our Institute of Biodiversity and Evolutionary Biology at the University of Valencia, we are pleased to invite you to the 16th International Symposium on Early and Lower Vertebrates (ISELV) that will be held in the city of Valencia, Spain. This Symposia is the only recurring international meeting targeted specifically towards the Palaeozoic vertebrate research community.

With more than 50 years of history, the meeting has been held uninterrupted since 1967 every 3-4 years (in the past) and every two years in more recent times (when pandemics allowed us). This Symposia is the only recurring international meeting targeted specifically towards the Palaeozoic vertebrate research community. For this, topics of presentations related with any aspect of the origin, diversity, and early evolution of vertebrates (including first tetrapods) are welcome.

As previous sympoisums, we would like to dedicate the 16th ISELV to two outstanding early vertebrate researchers: Dr. Philippe Janvier and Dr. Tiiu Märss, in order to recognise their contribution to the knowledge of early vertebrates. Both great colleagues and better people that have spent most of their life understanding and studying the Palaeozoic vertebrates in different fields. After the congress, a special volumen dedicated to them will be published at the Spanish Journal of Palaeontolgy.

This year the Symposia will be held in Valencia, a 2.000-year-old city located on Spain’s east coast, which constitutes the third-largest city in the country. Aside from a moderate and pleasant climate, Valencia comprises a great variety of attractions, including wide sandy beaches, a rich cuisine and stunning landmarks such as the cathedral, the Mercado Central and the Unesco-listed Lonja de la Seda. Scientific sessions will take part at the Botanical Gardens of the University of Valencia, a living museum located in the historical centre of the city.

On this webpage, you will find all the needed information and registration online form.

We are looking forward to seeing you in Valencia in 2022!
